The Monroe Fire Department responded to a mobile home on fire on Monroe’s south side at 7:10 p.m. on Aug. 4. The cause of the fire is not known.

MONROE — Fire caused significant damage to a mobile home in the city last Friday.

Officials responded to reports of the fire — at 2633 8th Ave, Unit 24 — just before 7:10 p.m. Once they arrived, the fire had grown significantly and it caused extensive damage.

No one was injured as a result of the fire, officials said.

Damage to the property was estimated at about $10,000 and the trailer is no longer in livable condition.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, said Police Chief Fred Kelley on Monday.

“One little fire in a trailer can cause significant property damage,” said Kelley. “We were called in to provide investigative assistance.”

The fire likely started in the kitchen of the unit, said interim Fire Chief Al Rufer on Monday. The blaze was contained to the trailer, and no other neighboring homes were damaged or affected.

“There was heavy smoke damage to the entire” home, Rufer said. “It is awfully hard for people to go back in once that happens.”

The resident of the property, Carrie Thompson, has been charged with multiple misdemeanors in Green County Circuit Court for allegedly taking items from the grave sites of people in area cemeteries. Her arrest in June of 2022 on about 40 counts followed a lengthy investigation by police, who also sought to reunite loved ones with stolen property, which they had accumulated at the police station.

Other investigators in Rock and Lafayette counties also were reportedly investigating Thompson but it does not appear that any additional charges were filed in those areas.

Her next court appearance in Green County for that case is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
