MONROE - The city could have a new city administrator in less than two months.
The city has been without an administrator since May 13, 2008.
The City of Monroe Salary & Personnel Committee chose 11 candidates from 59 applications to continue in its process of finding the next city administrator.
Committee members, other aldermen and Mayor Bill Ross, with representatives from Public Administration Associates LLC from Oshkosh, met in a closed meeting Monday to sort through the applications for the administrator position.
"We choose 11 candidates, with two alternates just in case someone has already been hired someplace else," said Charles Schuringa, chairman of the committee.
Schuringa said half of the chosen applicants are from Wisconsin and the remaining from outside the state.
Public Administration Associates will now conduct background reference checks and obtain a 6-minute video interview from each semi-finalist.
The committee will meet again in about two weeks to review the video tapes of each of the 11 candidates. Schuringa expects that meeting to be in closed session.
"We hope to get it down to four or five candidates then," Schuringa said.
After the final choices are selected, the city will begin to invite candidates to the city to be interviewed personally by the committee and to tour the city.
According to Public Administration Associates' proposed timeline, council members will interview finalists and select a first choice Oct. 8 and 9. Public Administration Associates will help negotiate employment terms with the designated candidate.
Should the city's offer be acceptable to the final candidate, the Common Council will make the offer and adopt the employment agreement in open session about Oct. 12.
The new administrator may need 30 days to give notice before assuming the duties at Monroe.
The 16-week hiring process from Public Administration Associates costs about $8,800. Advertising costs and travel costs for finalists are extra.
