MONROE - The Green County Fair works to provide new entertainment each year and entice crowds to return annually, fair board president John Dieckhoff said, noting a number of events original to the 2017 fair.
"We're always trying to change things up," Dieckhoff said. "One thing that's kind of different is there are a lot more free grandstand events. We do it to keep them interested in coming to the fair."
One of the free grandstand events this year is the rodeo. C.C. Bull Riding and Barrel Racing starts at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. It is a shift from previous years to accommodate what Dieckhoff said is currently most popular among crowds.
"A little bit of everything is a little bit new," he added.
The Badger State Tractor Pull is scheduled as it has been in previous years on Thursday night, with grandstand admission of $5 in addition to general fair admission. But at 7 p.m. Friday, a free local truck and tractor pull will take place in the grandstand with "stuff that comes right out of the field," Dieckhoff said, including four-wheel truck classes and tractor classes.
Fireworks will return this year. As for concerns created by booming fireworks last year, Dieckhoff said the issue has been solved after asking better questions. He noted the board had "learned an awful lot last year" after the fireworks show spooked show animals.
"There really wasn't going to be fireworks again," Dieckhoff said. "But we had really great reviews from the crowd."
Once the board discussed its options with the fireworks company, Dieckhoff said it realized the display could include quieter fireworks and that it could be scheduled on Saturday evening, which would be after all animals are shown.
Before the display, the fair's first ever Monster Truck show will begin at 8 p.m. in the grandstand; admission is $5. There will also be ATV racing.
A wrestling event similar to WWE shows has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday before the demolition derby begins. The Brew City All-Star Heavyweight Wrestling group will bring the pain with matches in the JMB Show Barn. The demo derby begins at 4:30 in the grandstand and admission is $10.
"We always expect the best," Dieckhoff said of his hopes for the fair season. "You kind of plan for the worst. We're already watching the weather really close."
The Green County Fair Opening Ceremony is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Colony Brands Grandstand, though animal judging and exhibition hall events begin at 7 a.m., and a magic show starts at 1:30 p.m. in the hospitality tent.
