MONROE - Royalty has been crowned in Green County.

Dennis and Janice Everson have been selected as the 2010 Green County Cheese Days King and Queen.

"We're honored to be chosen," Everson said. "We're looking forward to it."

The king and queen play an important part in promoting Cheese Days. They will speak to school and community organizations to promote the festival, which will bring about 100,000 people to Monroe in September.

Cheese Days helped bring the Eversons together.

In 1976, Dennis met Janice during the festival. She was a Cheese Days co-queen. She noticed Dennis wasn't wearing a commemorative Cheese Days button and made sure he got a button pinned to his shirt.

By the following Cheese Days festival, they were engaged to be married.

Janice's family has been involved with cheesemaking for many years. Her grandparents, John and Clara Rechsteiner, operated the Mud Branch Cheese Factory near Argyle. Her mother, Helen, who lives in Monticello, was a "cheese queen" for a June Dairy Month celebration in Mount Horeb back in 1938.

She also is 100 percent Swiss. Her maternal and paternal grandparents emigrated from the canton of Appenzell, Switzerland, and often spoke the Swiss language, particularly when adults had conversations not intended for children's ears. As a child, Janice was nicknamed "the klie," which means, "the little one." Her family was active in the Old World Swiss Club.

The couple have been involved with Cheese Days for many years. Janice was a member of the ambassador selection committee. Dennis co-chaired the festival several times, and served as president and treasurer.

Dennis is employed at Wisconsin Community Bank. Janice is employed by the Monroe Clinic.

They have two sons, Erik and Kyle.

The Eversons also are involved in many other community activities, including the local literacy council, Monroe Arts Center and Grace Lutheran Church. They've been active in the Boy Scouts of American and the Green County Family YMCA.
