Zelma Louise (Lehnherr) Bauman, 98, died on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at her home in Monroe. She was born on January 24, 1919 at Deconese Hospital in Monroe to Christian Fred and Dora (Bayrhoffer) Lehnherr.
Zelma attended Franklin Rural Grade School and Monroe High School, graduating in 1936. She studied at Carroll College for 2 years and graduated from Grover Barnhardt Business School in Madison in 1940. Prior to her marriage she was employed by Dr. N.A. Hill in Madison.
On February 16, 1941, Zelma married William Karl Bauman, Sr. at St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Monroe. She devoted her life to her family and to the 4 generation family business, Bauman Ace Hardware.
Zelma was a lifelong member of St. John's UCC, where she taught Sunday School. She was a Girl Scout Leader, avid sports enthusiast, bridge player, church quilter, and bird watcher.
Survivors include 5 children, William K. (Sharon) Bauman, Jr., Hudson, Kay (Rev. Robert) Christman, Green Bay, Ann (Ross) Moody, Sydney, Australia, Barbara (Dan) Gelbach, Monroe, and John (Jenny Zimmerman) Bauman; Sisters, Oregon; daughter-in-law, Mary Bauman, Monroe; one sister, Alice Hendrickson, Ft. Atkinson; 11 grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, their families and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William; brothers, Nathan and Harold; twin sister, Thelma Demming; sister, Leona Naeyaert; and granddaughter, Anna Christman Horvath.
From baptism to death, Zelma was a child of God. "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life".
Visitation will be at 10:00 am until time of service at 11:00 am, Thursday, May 18, 2017 at St. John's UCC with Rev. Kathleen Rinear officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. John's UCC, Monroe, Family Promise of Green County or a charity of your choice. Shriner Hager Gohlke Funeral Home is assisting the family.
