William F. Smith, age 88 of Monroe, died Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on December 26, 1925 in Mauston, WI; the son of E. Wray and Emma (Dehmlow) Smith. William was a graduate of Alma Center High School, attended U.W. Whitewater and graduated from Spencerian Business College in Milwaukee. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in October of 1943 being discharged as a Corporal in January of 1946, serving with the 824th Bomb Squadron with the 15th Air Force completing 19 combat missions. William and Joyce Severson were married on January 6, 1952 in Monroe. He worked for Phillips & Smith Furniture and Appliance for 44 years, retiring in 1990. William was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Monroe Country Club, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #754, Zilmer Riley American Legion Post 384, Sons of Norway Sans-Souci Dance Club and several card clubs. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons, traveling, golfing, bowling, slow pitch and fast pitch softball. He was a loving father and grandfather who was always there to support his family.

Surviving is his wife, Joyce Smith of Monroe; children, Gregory (Karen) Smith of Apple River, IL, Mary Jo Hasler of Monroe, Kim (Corrie) Smith of Oregon, Jim Smith of Monroe; 8 grandchildren, Scott (Josh) Smith, Chrissie Smith, Jennifer (Larry) Meyer, Tim (Nicki) Hasler, Andrea (Tyler) DeNure, Tyler Smith, Ashley Smith and Katie Smith; 4 great-grandchildren: Brianna, Austin and Abby Meyer, and Addisyn Smith; sisters, Shirley Billerbeck of Osseo and Mildred Byrns of Merrillan; brother-in-law, Russell Severson; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Klemm and Darlyne Campbell; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is predeceased by his parents; son, James William in infancy; son-in-law, Fred Hasler; brothers, Ken and Orville Smith; sisters, Iola Printz and Lorraine Nemitz.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Grace Lutheran Church, with Rev. John Tabaka officiating. Burial will be in the Jordan Lutheran Cemetery, Jordan Township. A visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the: Behring Senior Center Endowment Fund, Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or Grace Lutheran Church.
