Willard G. Mauermann, age 88 of Monroe, died Friday, January 15, 2010 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, surrounded by his family. He was born on May 13, 1921 in Monroe, the son of William and Anna (Schultz) Mauermann. Willard was a 1939 graduate from Monroe High School. Willard married Helen Salzwedel on January 1, 1942 in Monroe. He was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and was a B-24 bomber pilot with the U.S. Air Force Cadets serving from March 1943 to September 1945. During WW II, he flew missions out of southern Italy over northern Italy, Germany, Austria and Yugoslavia. He received the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Willard and Helen owned and operated Fritz Cleaners for 25 years. He then worked as a messenger for Swiss Colony until his retirement. He was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church. Willard and Helen enjoyed traveling, especially taking cruises and visiting Branson.

He is survived by 2 sons, Jim (Lynda) Mauermann of Brodhead and Ron (Lois) Mauermann of Green Bay; 5 grandchildren, Craig (Sara) Mauermann of Brookfield, Shelli Fowell of Hudson, Fred (Jessie) Mauermann of Muskego and Phil and Jacob Mauermann of Green Bay; 5 great-grandchildren, Courtney and Meghan Fowell, Abby, Matthew and Elisabeth Mauermann; sisters-in-law, Ruth Salzwedel, Gladys Kesler and Florence Salzwedel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen in 1999; brother, Stanley (Esther) Mauermann; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lloyd (Evelyn) Salzwedel, Bob (Helen) Salzwedel, Frank Salzwedel, George Salzwedel and Cliff Kesler.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 22, 2010 at Monroe United Methodist Church, with Reverend Randy Booth officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home. A memorial is being established in Willard's memory.
