Walter W. McKillip, age 93 of Monroe, died Friday, February 24, 2017 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on March 25, 1923 in Willow Springs, Wisconsin, the son of George and Edna (Tubbs) McKillip. Walter married Idellis Halvorson on April 27, 1946 in Darlington; she died Jan. 7, 2017.
Walter proudly served in the U.S. Army, in the Philippians, during WWII; he enlisted on December 8, 1941, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Walter farmed for many years, he also worked at Burgess Battery Company in Freeport for 15 years, and Browntown Foundry for 7 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Cecil Jones VFW post 2312 in Monroe; and he enjoyed fishing, watching the Green Bay Packers, doing carpentry, and plastic canvas crafts. Walter will be remembered for being quick witted and for his dry sense of humor.
He is survived by his son, Terry (Chris) McKillip of Rockford, IL and his daughter, Barbara (Ray) Shearer of Kalamazoo, MI; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren, and one due in April; 2 great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother-in-law, Clinton (Pauliene) Halvorson of Darlington; 3 sister-in-laws: Melva (Henry) Tschanz of Monroe, Jeaneen (Bob) Benson of Darlington, and Phyllis McKillip of Platteville; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Idellis; son, Gary; 4 brothers: Vincent, Harold, George, and Kenneth McKillip and 4 sisters: Gladys Gross, Gertie Gross, Lauretta Quinn, and Grace McKillip.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Shriner Hager Gohlke Funeral Home, with Reverend Kathleen Rinear officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of service.
