Wallace H. Miller, age 89 of Monroe, died Sunday, February 12, 2012 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Monroe.
Wally was born January 1, 1923 in Monroe, the son of Frederick "Frick" and Bernice "Bun" (Taylor) Miller. He graduated in 1941 from Monroe High School where he played basketball and football.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on Nov. 25, 1942 as a pilot trainee. He was a single engine fighter pilot with the 10th Air Force, 80th Fighter Group, 88th Fighter Squadron (The Burma Banshees). Wally compiled 101 combat missions in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater over Burma. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with Three Battle Stars, American Theater Ribbon, and the World War II Victor Medal. Lieutenant Miller was honorably discharged from active duty on Dec. 26, 1945.
He married Verline R. Loeffel on September 28, 1946 at St. John's United Church of Christ, Monroe.
Wally worked for the Monroe Department of Public Works, was a salesman for Snively Town and Country Furniture, and was employed at Bruni-Miller Co. Inc. and subsequently Monroe Lumber Co. until his retirement.
He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Monroe American Legion Post #84, and a former Greenwood Cemetery Board member.
Wally was a longtime member of the Wednesday Night Businessman's Golf League at Windy Acres and the Tuesday Night Bowling League at Turner Hall. He bowled two 700 series and finished in third place in the 1969 and 1970 Green County Huber Golf Open.
He is survived by three children, Linda (Tom) Schneeberger of Monroe, Pamela (Tony) LaValliere of Madison, and David (Kate) Miller of Oregon, WI; three grandchildren, Jeff and Mark Schneeberger of Monroe, and Christine (Dan) Shaw of Janesville; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father in 1970; his mother in 1973; and his wife, Verline, in 2006.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2012, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe.
