Viola J. Zimmerman, age 93 of Monroe, died on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at the New Glarus Home. She was born on April 1, 1918 in Verona, the daughter of Fridolin "Fred" and Josephine (Gisler) Zweifel. Viola and Werner Zimmerman were married on June 1, 1936 in Freeport, Illinois. Viola worked alongside her husband, Werner, making cheese in the Wood Andrews Cheese Factory in South Wayne and later made cheese at the Green County Co-Op in Monroe until 1962. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, and Women of the Moose Chapter #599. Viola enjoyed being outdoors, tending her gardens, especially her flower gardens. She liked to travel, always looking forward to her next trip.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Roger (Jan) Zimmerman of Madison; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She is predeceased by her husband, Werner; son, Werner Jr.; brothers, Fred and Henry Zweifel; sisters, Josephine Woodstock, Alice Juve, Adeline Halverson and a half sister, Anna Marti.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:30 p.m., August 15, 2011 at Shriner Hager Gohlke funeral home, with Reverend Gretchen Sylvester officiating. Burial will be in the Belleville Cemetery at a later date. A visitation will be held on Monday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Viola's name to St. John's United Church of Christ.
