FREEPORT - Two men were seriously injured south of Freeport on Saturday evening, Feb. 25, in a one-car rollover accident that the Stephenson County Sheriff's Department is attributing to speeding and alcohol.
Kyle B. Watter, 19, Albany, was driving a Mercury Mariner SUV on South Park Road when he hit a patch of ice and lost control of the vehicle, according to a press release.
The vehicle flipped "numerous times" into a nearby field, ejecting passenger Dustin W. Runkle, 24, Freeport.
Runkle was airlifted by React Helicopter to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where the sheriff's office says he is listed in critical condition in the neurointensive care unit.
Watter was initially transported by Star Ambulance to Freeport Memorial Hospital, then later transferred in serious condition by React Helicopter to the Rockford Memorial Hospital.
The accident is still under investigation, but authorities believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors.
