Thomas A. Surrell Sr., 80 of South Wayne, died Monday, April 17, 2017 at his home. Tom was born on July 20, 1936 in Dayton, Ohio, the son of Louis Surrell Sr. and Ruth Peters. He married Dorothy Kay Everman on September 22, 1956 in Wyckles Corner, IL. The couple lived in Decatur, IL until moving to Monroe in 1962 and has lived in South Wayne since 1988. He was employed in maintenance for many years at the Green County Hospital, Green County Pre-Pak, and Monroe Truck Equipment before retiring in 1993. In South Wayne, he operated Tom's Refrigeration for a few years. Tom loved spending time with his family, camping, fishing, and traveling with Kay. He enjoyed going to breakfast and visiting with people.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kay Surrell of South Wayne; four children, Dorothy (Blake) Peterson of Janesville, Thomas Surrell Jr. of Monroe, Debbie Wenger of Monroe, and Donald (Betty) Surrell of Albany; eight grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Evelyn; a special niece that was raised by Tom, Ruth Andrews of Monroe; and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jim, Ernest "Bill", and John Surrell; and four sisters, Ruth Walters, Eva Mae Garwell, Ruby Johnson, and Judy Garwell.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at 11:30 a.m., at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, with Reverend Randy Booth officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe, followed by a luncheon at the Monroe American Legion Post #84. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund will be established in Tom's name.
