BELMONT - Thomas A. Skattum, 97, of Belmont, died on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Southwest Health Center Hospital, Platteville. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2012 at the Peace Lutheran Church, Belmont. Rev. Connie Matye will officiate. Burial will be at the Belmont Cemetery, Belmont, where military rites will be accorded. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, or from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at the church. Thomas was born on April 4, 1914 in Argyle, Wisconsin, the son of Andrew and Tilda (Gilbertson) Skattum. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1932. Tom was united in marriage to Edna Kracke on November 21, 1940 at Peace Lutheran Church, Belmont. She preceded him in death on March 22, 1974. Tom served in the United States Army during WW II from 1941 - 1945. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in C Company, 99th Infantry Battalion, Special Forces, Norway, also known as Liberation Forces. He drove truck for Sun Beam Bread, and later for Coca-Cola. Tom farmed for many years in Elk Grove Twp., Lafayette County until his retirement. Tom sold World Book Encyclopedias for many years. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Belmont, American Legion, Sons of Norway and the Belmont Sportsman's Club. He served on the Peace Lutheran Church Council, Belmont Community School Board, and Lafayette County Draft Board. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, especially to Norway where he had a great love for. Tom especially loved to spend time with his family. He is survived by two children, Craig (Doris) Skattum of Mifflin, WI; Cindy (Mike) Mair of Sheboygan Falls, WI; daughter-in-law, Kay Mead of Blanchardville, WI; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Field of Monticello, WI; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Erik Skattum in 1998, grandson, Tommy Skattum in 2011, brothers, Orville, Leland, and Robert Skattum, and sisters, Martha Mau, Alpha Field, and Esther Kubly.
