Shirley Ann Johnson, age 82, of Darlington, WI passed away Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Lafayette Manor in Darlington. She was born May 29, 1932, on the family farm in Argyle Township, WI, the daughter of Francis and Blanche (Lunda) Olson. She graduated from Argyle High School in 1949 and attended Madison Area Technical College. Shirley was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Vernon Johnson, on February 3, 1951 at Apple Grove Lutheran Church in rural Argyle. She worked in Madison for General Motors Acceptance Corporation. Following Vernon's enlistment in the United States Navy they moved to San Diego, CA, where she worked at the San Diego Tribune. They then moved to Oakland, CA, where she worked at Oliver Corporation. Following Vernon's honorable discharge from the United States Navy in 1955, they moved back to Wiota and began farming. She worked at Micro Switch in Warren, IL, and at the Case dealer in Wiota. She owned and operated her own dress shop, The Fashion House, in Darlington. A few years later she sold her dress shop and began working for a photo studio in Darlington. Shirley worked at Cupid's Creations Bridal Shop and Europa Gift Shop both in Monroe. She also worked at L & M Bake Shop in Darlington for a few years. They retired and moved to Gratiot, where they called home for 20 years, before moving into the City of Darlington.
Shirley is survived by her husband: Vernon at home; two daughters: Jalaine (Robert) Ruegsegger of Darlington and Sheila (Jonathan) Carrington of Gratiot; and one brother: David (Jane) Olson of Argyle. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister: Mary Kay Gibson.
Shirley was a member of Wiota Lutheran Church and its Women of ELCA. She was on the church committee, which coordinated and designed the newly built Wiota Lutheran Church. Shirley enjoyed many years of traveling throughout the United States and Canada. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Wiota Lutheran Church, 6682 State Highway 78 in rural South Wayne, WI, with Rev. Luke S. Smetters officiating. Burial will be in West Wiota Cemetery in rural Gratiot, WI. A visitation will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Wiota Lutheran Church.
