BROWNTOWN - A multiple-vehicle crash 6 miles west of Monroe sent several people to the hospital late Monday afternoon, May 13.
The accident occurred at about 4:50 p.m. on Wis. 11 at County M in the town of Cadiz. A 2011 Toyota Corolla, driven by Keith E. Geisler, 50, of rural Monroe was eastbound on Wis. 11, waiting for westbound traffic before turning north on County M, according to the Green County Sheriff's Department. A 2003 Chrysler Town and Country minivan, operated by Timothy J. Schmid, 33, of South Wayne was also eastbound on Wis. 11 when it rear-ended Geisler's vehicle. Schmid's vehicle continued across the intersection and came to a rest in the north ditch. A 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe sport utility vehicle, operated by Lucas A. Suthers, 37, of rural Monroe was westbound on Wis. 11. Suthers attempted to avoid the collision and spun sideways. A 1997 Chevrolet S10 pickup, operated by Lawrence A. Handfelt, 48, of Warren, Ill. was westbound on Wis. 11 and collided with the Suthers' vehicle. Suther's vehicle then skidded into the south ditch and Handfelt's vehicle came to a rest on Wis. 11.
The accident closed the highway until about 9 p.m. Monday.
Schmid had minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene; he had three juvenile passengers who were not injured. He was cited for following too closely and released with a court date.
Geisler was partially ejected and had to be extricated. He was injured and transported to Monroe Clinic ER by Green County EMS. His passenger, Roxanne E. Geisler, 48, also of rural Monroe, was injured. She was extricated and taken by Med Flight to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.
Handfelt sustained injuries and was transported by Argyle EMS to Monroe Clinic ER.
Suthers was not injured, nor were his three passengers.
The vehicles belonging to Schmid, Geisler and Handfelt all had severe or very severe damage. Suther's vehicle had moderate damage. All vehicles were towed from the scene.
Along with Green County, the Wisconsin State Patrol responded. They were assisted by Browntown, South Wayne and Monroe Fire Departments along with Green County EMS, Argyle Ambulances and UW Med Flight.
