NEW GLARUS - Mrs. Ruth Viola Erickson, age 87, of New Glarus passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the New Glarus Home. She was born on January 26, 1924 in New Glarus to her parents Willard H. and Pearl V. (Showers) Marty. Ruth graduated from New Glarus High School in 1941. On December 16, 1942 she was united in marriage to Virgil K. Erickson at the church parsonage in Blanchardville. Ruth was a homemaker and farmed with her husband in the town of York for many years. She was a member of the York Memorial Lutheran Church, the Sarah Circle of WELCA, a Sunday school teacher, Project Linus Quilts, Lutheran World Relief Quilts, and the Bem School Homemakers. Ruth was also among the first Wilhelm Tell Usherettes.

Ruth is survived by her five children Patricia Manthey of Plymouth, WI, Vicki (Donald) Meyer of Belleville, WI, Kenneth (Jeannie) Erickson of Monroe, WI, Donald (Jean) Erickson of Colorado Springs, CO, and Ronald (Rose) Erickson of New Glarus, WI, twelve grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. She is further survived by a sister Janice (Richard) Brunsell of Madison, WI, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Sylvan (Betty) Erickson of Blanchardville, WI, and sister-in-law Audrey Erickson of Mt. Horeb, WI.

She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil, son-in-law Gary Manthey, a brother Norman Marty, and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at York Memorial Lutheran Church, N9407 State Road 78, Blanchardville, WI 53516 with Pastor Mark Gruner officiating with burial in the York Memorial Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home, 29 6th Avenue, New Glarus and also from 10:00 a.m. until time of service on Thursday at the church.

A memorial fund has been established in memory of Ruth.
