Roger M. Voelkli, age 96, formerly of Monroe, WI, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 4, 2017, at Porter Hospice in Centennial, CO. Roger lived with his daughter, Linda Kubly, in Parker, CO for the past two years.
He was born February 28, 1921, in Monroe, WI, the son Max H. and Rose (Ruesegger) Voelkli. Roger was married to Gertrude (Jegerlehner) Voelkli for over 67 years. Roger graduated from Monroe High School in 1939. He served his country as a First Lieutenant in Italy during WWII in the US Army 15th Air Core Division.
Roger worked with the Voelkli family business, having the original name of Monroe Ready Mix and Material Company, Inc., until eventually becoming the sole owner. He was instrumental in up-grading the concrete plant over the years and for having a local artist paint the ready mix truck barrels with Swiss heritage, Monroe and Wisconsin inspired logos and themes. As the Monroe Ready Mix business grew over the years, it encompassed three distinct areas of expertise (the ready mix concrete plant division, a well respected concrete construction division along with a very experienced and dedicated excavation division). At its peak, the Monroe Ready Mix, Inc. employed many people from the local area. Roger was very good to his employees and always treasured and respected each and every one of them for their dedication and loyalty over the many years.
Roger was also a land developer in the Monroe area. He held a Wisconsin Real Estate Broker's License which enabled him to sell his developed lots in the Monroe Country Club area, and also lots located on the west side business district of Monroe. For many years he was a member of the Monroe Country Club. He was also a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, the Cecil Jones VFW Post 2312, the American Legion Zilmer Riley Post No. 84, and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge. Roger was a very social person who loved to be with people. His travels took him to Africa, Europe, Mexico, Canada, and many parts of the US. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed hiking and walking throughout his long life.
Roger was a volunteer fireman for the Monroe Fire Department for many years and also served as a Green County Deputy Sheriff. He was an avid hunter, sportsman, and outdoorsman. He hunted in Wyoming, Arizona, Alaska, and Canada, as well as many places in southern and central Wisconsin. Roger was passionate about nature and the great outdoors.
He also loved to dance. Roger and his wife, Gertrude, square danced in the late 1950s. He also loved to polka and on many weekends you could find Roger and Gert at the New Glarus Hotel and the Monroe Turner Hall. He loved to go out to eat and treat his family and friends to a great meal and a glass of wine. He loved being active and always wanted his family and friends to have a good time.
Surviving children are, Linda (Voelkli) Kubly of Parker, CO, and Max R. Voelkli of Madison, WI. He was also blessed with 6 grandchildren, Edward, Eric, and Wendy Kubly of Parker, CO, Ryan Voelkli of San Francisco, Andrew and Michael Voelkli of Madison, WI; and 3 great-grandchildren.
Roger was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gertrude (Jegerlehner) Voelkli, a sister, Joan Hoesly of Black Earth, WI, a brother, James Voelkli, a son, Jack Voelkli, mother, Rose (Ruegsegger) Voelkli and father Max H. Voelkli all of Monroe.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 17, 2017 at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1724 14th Street, Monroe, WI, with Rev. Todd Hackman officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of service, burial will follow with a military graveside service, followed by a luncheon in the church basement (Fellowship Hall). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. John's United Church of Christ in Roger's name.
