Richard L. Thompson, age 67 of Monroe, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2014 at Pleasant View Nursing Home after a long battle with cancer. He was born on November 3, 1946 in Monroe, the son of Merlin Thompson and Mayona (Rear) Johnson and graduated from Monroe High School.

Richard entered the U.S. Army in Jan. 1966 and was trained as a Combat Engineer in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and was then stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas with the 31st Engineers. In January of 1967 his unit was sent to Vietnam and they were renamed the 39th Combat Engineer Battalion. He was honorably discharged in December 1967.

He worked for the Monroe U.S. Postal Service for 20 years and was an excellent carpenter. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Monroe, Loyal order of Moose Lodge #754 and VFW.

Richard married Connie Becker in 1971 in Monroe and had 3 children. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, his family and friends.

Surviving are his mother, Mayona (Rear) Johnson; son, Richard M. Thompson; daughters, Carrie Thompson and Corrie Gilbertson all of Monroe and 5 grandchildren; brothers, Ronald L. (Debra) Thompson of Monroe, Rodger L. Thompson of Roanoke, TX; sisters, Rhonda M. (Gary) Rufenacht of Monroe, and Renita M. (Patrick) Coyle of Cross Plains; nephews, Ryan Meinert, of Davis, IL; Kevin Meinert of Monroe, nieces, Michelle (Casey) Phillips of Monroe, Amanda (Tommy) Ingwell of Mineral Point and Amber Thompson of Sun Prairie.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, Merlin Thompson and a brother, Merlin Thompson Jr.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 on Wednesday, June 25th at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home 1455 Mansion Dr., and 18th Avenue, Monroe with a Moose Lodge Service at 7:00 p.m.

There will be a private burial with family at a later date.
