Rena Louise Smith, age 77, a lifetime resident of Monroe, died Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. Rena was born on December 10,1937 the daughter of Roland E. and Marian Weckerly Thorp. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1955 and Madison Business College in 1956. She married Thomas R. Smith on November 29, 1959 at the United Methodist Church. Rena was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Monroe United Methodist Church, The Green County Historical Society, Women's Club of Monroe, The Women of the Moose, and The VFW Women's Auxiliary. She was a long time volunteer for the Monroe Clinic Hospital having given 18 years of service. She also faithfully volunteered for the Monroe Welcome Center, the Historical Museum, and The Monroe Senior Center.
Rena enjoyed watching sports, traveling, reading, camping, and cross stitch. She was an avid fan of the Monroe Cheesemakers, Wisconsin Badgers, Green Bay Packers, and Chicago Cubs. Mostly she enjoyed spending time with her grandkids.
She is survived by her son Todd (Trish) Smith of Monroe, and daughters Tracy (Craig) Signer of Monroe, Tina (Ken) Mesecher of Texas. Grandchildren, Jocelyn Nielsen (Peter), Aaron Smith, Samantha Smith (Nate), Nicholas Signer, Trevor Signer, Hallie Signer, Brian Mesecher (Candace), Garrett Mesecher, Andrew Mesecher, and Grant Mesecher. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Smith on February 28 2015, her father on January 31, 1985, her mother on May 12, 1998, and a brother Theodore on May 8, 1951.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at 11:00 A.M., at the Monroe United Methodist Church with Reverend Randy Booth officiating. A private family interment will be held in Saucerman Cemetery, Cadiz Township. Visitation will be on Monday, October 19, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in Rena's name.
