Paul F. Benkert, age 86, of Monroe, Wisconsin, passed away Thursday, Oct. 2, at Monroe Clinic Hospital. He will be remembered as a hard-working man who loved his family and simple pleasures.
Paul was born January 15, 1922 in Monroe Township to Robert and Marie (Kuenzie) Benkert. He attended Argus School and was a 1939 graduate of Monroe High School. Paul married Alice Schmid on October 9, 1947, at St. John's United Church of Christ. He was a life-long member of St. John's United Church of Christ, and served as a Sunday School teacher and Church Council member.
Paul worked on the family farm and was a member of the Wisconsin State Guard. He operated the Crandall Texaco Service Station for five years and then managed the Sieg automotive parts store for 35 years. He enjoyed working on cars and in later years road his bicycle many hundreds of miles on the Sugar River Trail.
Paul is survived by his wife, Alice; his children, Doug (Cathi) of Bloomington, Illinois, Kathy (Paul) Holley of Racine, and Scott (Kira Raichert) of Waukesha; grandchildren, Allison and Dwight Holley and Hope Amador; step-grandchildren, Dan (Angie) Neubauer and Mike Neubauer; step-great-grandchildren, Alexis, Emma and Jacob Neubauer; brother, Robert (Marge) Benkert, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Connie Amador, brother, Glen; and step-great-grandson, Joshuah Neubauer.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at St. John's United Church of Christ, with Reverend William T. Mike Heath officiating. Visitation will be on Monday, Oct. 6, at the Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial fund will be established.
