DARLINGTON - The victim of a fatal motorcycle crash Saturday afternoon in Lafayette County was identified by authorities as Michael J. Engelke, 52, of rural Belmont.
According to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office, Engelke was riding his 2008 Harley-Davidson northbound on Ollie Belle Road, about a half mile north of New Diggings, when he lost control and crashed the bike in a curve. The incident was reported at about 4:40 p.m.
Engelke was pronounced dead at the scene by Lafayette County Coroner Virginia Douglas, according to a sheriff's office statement.
He was not wearing a helmet, and police continued to investigate the crash.
Engelke is the third person to die on county roads so far this year, officials said.
