Matthew J. Steffes, age 61 of Monroe, died following a brief illness on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at his mother's home in Platteville.
Matt was born April 1, 1947 in Dodgeville, WI, the son of John E. and Jean (Taylor) Steffes. He graduated from Belmont High School in 1965. He was stationed in Colorado and Germany while serving in the U.S. Army from 1966 until 1968.
He married Beverly Gordon on June 30, 1973 in Shullsburg, WI.
Matt worked for Borg instruments in Darlington for 12 years before moving to Monroe where he was employed in the Maintenance Dept. of Advance Transformer for 17 years, and later worked as district manager for the Wisconsin State Journal. The last few years he has worked as a driver for Dunham Express and Access Transit. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, baseball games, bingo, and playing cribbage. Matt also looked forward to his yearly Sheepshead game with his former Borg co-workers.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Steffes of Monroe; three children, Shannon Steffes, Shanelle Sanchez, and Shawn Steffes, all of Monroe; three grandchildren, Selena, Oscar, and Alex Sanchez; his mother, Jean Steffes of Platteville; four brothers, John (Peggy) of Mineral Point, Bernard of Dubuque, IA, Jerry (Jannan) of Cuba City, and Daniel of Platteville; and five sisters, Virginia (Kenneth) Leahy of Belmont, WI, Marion (John) Calvert of Benton, WI, Joanne (Jeff) Chandler of Platteville, Doris (Craig) Skattum of Rewey, WI, and Debbie (Scott) Andrews of Darlington. He was preceded in death by his father in 1983.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2008, at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe, with Monsignor Thomas Campion officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. A memorial fund will be established in Matt's name.
