LENA - A head-on collision between a semi and a station wagon left one person dead at the scene at about 3:40 p.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 20 near Lena.
Robert Dizillo, 42, Schaumburg, Ill., died from injuries sustained when his Ford Taurus station wagon crossed the center line on U.S. 20 and into the path of an on-coming semi-tractor and trailer, according to the Stephenson County Sheriff's Department. Dizillo was west-bound, just west of Damier Road near the Village of Lena, when the accident occurred.
The semi, driven by Charles A. Kunkle, 55, Freeport, caught fire before going into the south ditch. Kunkle was able to exit the semi before it was consumed by the fire. He was transported to Freeport Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.
The accident remains under investigation.
The Illinois State Police, Lena Police Department, Lena Fire Department, Leamons Ambulance, Stephenson County Reserve Deputies and the Stephenson County Coroner's office assisted at the scene.
