Karl H. Freitag, age 83 of Monticello, died on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe, after a long struggle with congestive heart failure and other health problems.

Karl was born on March 31, 1925 , the son of Jacob and Mary (Zentner) Freitag.

He attended Voegeli Country School and Monticello Public School where he graduated in 1943. Karl served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and was honorably discharged with several medals after attaining the rank of Master Sergeant.

On August 19, 1944, Karl married Mae Donmeyer at Camp Blanding, FL. Mae now resides at Angelus Retirement Community in Monroe. Karl and Mae raised two sons, Dr. Terry (Marilyn) Freitag of Monticello and Dr. Rick (Roberta) Freitag of Rice Lake, WI. He was a proud grandfather of Todd (Leidiana) Freitag, Angella (Thomas) Axelson, Dr. Brad (Deborah) Freitag, Tyler Freitag, Kristi Freitag, and Kevin Freitag; and great-grandfather of Hailey Freitag, Sophia Freitag, Analiese Axelson, Aubriana Axelson, Macey and Drew Freitag. Karl is also survived by a sister-in-law, Alma Freitag of Beloit. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Marvin and Howard Freitag.

Karl spent all of his working years in Monticello where he was a successful and well respected insurance agent for over 50 years.

He loved the Village of Monticello and served in many civic positions including mayor and helped develop the Sugar River Trail. He was a member of several insurance organizations, Amstutz-Marty American Legion Post #256 of Monticello, New Glarus Masonic Lodge, Monticello Community Club, and the Zwingli United Church of Christ. Karl looked forward to time with his family, traveling with Mae, and enjoyed the five years they lived in The Villages of Lady Lake, FL.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, January 10, 2008, at the Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, with Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Military graveside services will be in Highland Cemetery, Monticello. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in Karl's name. The Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, Monticello, is assisting the family.
