Karen M. (Pitterle) Roe, age 75 of Monticello, died peacefully in the Monroe Clinic Hospital on July 6, 2017. She was born on February 1, 1942, in Brazil, Indiana to Robert and Ruth (Hesselman) Pitterle. After graduating from Whitewater High School in 1960, she began working at the local phone company as a switchboard operator until she married Donald, her high school sweetheart, in 1962. They started their married life together dairying near Whitewater, WI where they welcomed three children into their home. In 1973, they moved to a dairy and crop farm near Monticello. Karen enjoyed polka dancing together with Don and the countless friends they made as they traveled around southern Wisconsin and the Midwest following their favorite bands. She was also active as an adult leader for the Silver-View 4-H Club and the Monticello Music Parents Association and an avid supporter of the Monticello Historical Society. Her children remember her as a kind and supportive mother and grandmother with a great sense of humor who encouraged them to pursue their goals and passions. She was an active member of the Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello. She loved baking for her family and friends, gardening, birdwatching and following the Packers and Wisconsin Badgers sports teams.
Karen is survived by her husband, Donald; children, Daniel (Sally) Roe, Monticello; Chris (Roby Chavez) Roe, New Orleans; and Brian (Elena Irwin) Roe, Columbus, Ohio; siblings, Roger (Chris) Pitterle, Beloit; Carla (Pete) Vosburg, Fort Atkinson; Vicki (Scott) Seljan, Jefferson; and 7 grandchildren, Natalie, Nicholas and Alex Roe; Antonio and Jayden Roe-Chavez; and Isaac and Elliot Roe. She is preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service will be held Monday, July 10, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello with Pastor Lance Smith officiating. Inurnment will be in Highland Cemetery in Monticello followed by a luncheon at Zwingli church. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in Karen's name. The Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, Monticello, is assisting the family.
