JANESVILLE - John L. Slatter, age 76, of Janesville, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 5, 2008 at Mercy Hospital. He was born December 6, 1931 in Rock County, the son of the late R. Douglas and Mildred (Sisson) Slatter. He was a graduate of Janesville High School, Class of 1949. In 1951 he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving on a small island off Iwo Jima. After a sales career at Montgomery Ward, Fuller Brush, and Jewel Tea, he went to work for General Motors Corp. until his retirement in 1995.
He was an avid fisherman, golfer, and gardener. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and had participated in many of their charitable endeavors. He was a longtime member of St. William's Catholic Church, and a former member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He served both parishes as Eucharistic minister, member of the Liturgy and Finance Committees, Parish Council, and Usher. When his children were younger, he was active in Scouting. His favorite role as a volunteer was as a Communion Distributor at Rock Haven.
John is survived by his wife, the former Irene Britt, whom he married February 6, 1954 at St. Victor's Catholic Church in Monroe; his four daughters, Mary (Robert) Arndt, and Theresa (Brian) Schricker, both of Janesville, Kathleen (Michael) Bentheimer, of Edgerton, and Elizabeth (Gerald) Wilson, of Brodhead; his three sons, Robert (Karrie) Slatter, of Woodstock, IL, David (Trudy) Slatter and Joseph (Barbara) Slatter, both of Janesville; his grandchildren, Austin, Abigail, Amelia, and Abraham Arndt, Martin, Madelyn, and Madison Schricker, Patrick (Brianna) and Laura Kuelz, Danielle and Paul Wilson, Sarah and Christina Jorgenson, Emily, Megan, Joshua, Lydia, Rachael, Margaret, JoEllen, and Anna Slatter; his two great-grandchildren, Reid and Leah Kuelz, his two brothers, William (Judith) Slatter, of Janesville, and Michael (Linda) Slatter, of Beloit; his sister-in-law, Helen Slatter, of Janesville; and by many, many nieces, nephews, and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, James, in 2000, and by his sister, Judith Meidl, in 2002.
Funeral services with a Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at ST. WILLIAM'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 456 N. Arch St., with Fr. John Auby officiating. Entombment will take place in Mt. Olivet Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., or on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at ST. WILLIAM'S CATHOLIC CHURCH.
