John A. Christen, age 90 of Monroe, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at the Skaalen Nursing Home in Stoughton, WI.
John was born September 9, 1920 in Green County, the son of John A. Christen Sr. and Rosa Annen. He attended East Clarno and Argus Rural Schools. John married Irma R. Herbert on September 4, 1937 in Dubuque, Iowa. He worked at the Golden Rod Creamery in Brodhead before entering the U.S. Army on June 7, 1944. Following his honorable discharge he made cheese at the West Clarno Cheese Factory from 1945-1946, farmed in Sylvester Township, and purchased his farm in Clarno Township in 1952. He retired from farming in 1989.
John was a lifetime member of Monroe V.F.W. Cecil Jones Post #2312, a member of the Monroe Moose Lodge #754, Green County Farm Bureau, Green County COOP Cheese Factory Board, attended East Clarno Zion United Methodist Church, and served as Treasurer for Equity Livestock for several years.
He is survived by three sons, Donald (Sandy) Christen of Freeport,
Keith (Sylvia) Christen of Edgerton, and Kim Christen (fiancée Dianne Dunks) of Blanchardville; 14 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and two sisters, Doris Wyss of Switzerland, and Jeanette Newett of West Palm Beach, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irma, in 1997; a son, Richard, in 2010; a grandson, Terry Christen; a great-grandson, Joshua Christen; and three sisters, Clara Blum, Elsie Vogel, and Olga Vogel.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 1, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe. Interment will be in the East Clarno Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. A memorial fund will be established in John's name.
