James F. Bultman, age 85 of Monticello, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, December 14, 2009. James was born on December 14, 1924 the son of William and Ida (Thuesen) Bultman. He graduated from East High School in 1942 and graduated Cum Laude from the School of Mechanical Engineering at U.W. Madison in 1950.
James grew up on the East Side of Madison and developed a passion for aviation at a young age, building model airplanes and participating in a Model Airplane Club.
He was accepted into the Aviation Cadet Program in April 1943. After aviation training, James was sent with the 413th Squadron to Iwo Jima, from June 27th, 1944 to December 1945. He flew over Tokyo Bay on one combat mission, and was transferred to the Phillipines before returning home on August,1946 and was relieved of active duty on September 22, 1946. He flew P-47s with the 414th Fighter Group, assigned to the 413th Squadron. James earned the Air Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal W/2 Br Stars and the Victory Medal. James a charter member of the Wisconsin 176th Fighter Squadron continued flying with the Wisconsin Air National Guard, accumulating 4,000 hours before his retirement. In the Air National Guard, Jim flew the F-51 Mustang and the F-86 and F-89 jet fighters.
James married his "once in a lifetime love," Ellen Parker on December 23, 1947 at the 1st Congregational Chapel in Madison. The couple enjoyed a happy marriage for nearly 62 years.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen M. Bultman of Monticello; son, John Bultman of Atlanta, GA; daughters, Janice (John) Bogott of Germantown, TN, Jennifer (David) Abb of Janesville, and Jamie (Tony) Keller of Monroe; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert Bultman, Donald (Phyllis) Bultman, and William (Dolores) Bultman, all of Madison; and sisters-in-law, Jeannine Bultman of Appleton and Joan Bultman of Mesa, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dale Bultman and Eldon Bultman; sister, Dorothy Buckley; brother-in-law, Harold Buckley; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Bultman.
James was confirmed in the Lutheran Church. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers you may donate to the charity of your choice.
