Jakob Schulthess, Sr. age 87, of Monroe, Wisconsin, formerly of the Woodford and Browntown area, died on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at the New Glarus Home. He was born on August 28, 1926 in Busswill, bei Melchnau, Switzerland, the son of Jakob and Lina (Zullig) Schulthess.

Jakob and Theresia Mundwiller were married in 1948; he later married Colleen Pederson on September 6, 1975 at St. John's United Church of Christ.

Jakob served in the Swiss Army and worked for the railroad in Basel, Switzerland before venturing to America with his young family on June 8, 1954 to farm with his uncle in the Woodford area. He later purchased his own dairy farm in the Woodford area and worked daily at the Swiss Colony Cheese and later as lead baker and Supervisor for the Swiss Colony Bakery, retiring in 1988.

Jakob was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and the Coon Hunters Association.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman: hunting, deer, antelope, buffalo, coon, coyote, but his biggest and most memorable hunt was when he went to Canada to hunt moose and landed a huge moose which he was so proud of. Jakob also had a passion for coon hunting which he received many awards competing in competition hunts traveling to different states to compete.

Jakob enjoyed finding a fixer up house, and remodeling them. After retirement he had one last venture, he moved from the Browntown area, purchasing the Badger Motel in Shullsburg with his wife Colleen in 2003, which they operated and enjoyed very much until health issues took them back to Monroe.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen Schulthess of Monroe, daughters, Sybil (Doug) Traverso of Yuba City, CA; Ursula (John) Meier of Juda; step-daughters, Chris (Bruce) Schoen of Beloit, Jeff (Debbie) Yaun of Monticello, Carolyn (Dave Kundert) Pederson of New Glarus; 9 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; 7-step-great-grandchildren, sister, Berthy Geugel of Arbon, Switzerland. He is predeceased by his parents, son, Jakob Schulthess Jr. in 2007, son, John, in infancy, brother, Otto; and a stepbrother and sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Shriner-Hager- Gohlke Funeral Home 1455 Mansion Dr., and 18th Avenue in Monroe with Rev. Tiff Bates officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Monroe.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the Monroe Clinic Hospice or the New Glarus Home.
