Irene Marty, 95, of Monticello, passed away at the New Glarus Home on Friday, April 10, 2009.
Irene was born on October 3, 1913 to Albert and Fannie (nee: Schultz) Marty on the farm in Mt. Pleasant township and lived in the Monticello area all her life.
She graduated from Monticello High School in 1931 and worked in Blum's Store. She was a lifelong member of Zwingli United Church of Christ where she sang in the choir for 50 years and taught Sunday School for many of those years. She was a member of the Monticello Amstutz-Marty Post #256 Legion Auxiliary. Playing piano was a favorite pastime. Irene was a long time local news columnist for the Monticello Messenger. She was well known in the area for her monologues, and participated at least 15 years in the Music and Monologues presentations. She was honored to be the parade marshall for Monticello's Homecoming in 1994. Irene loved to entertain and cook and shared that passion with her family and friends. She rarely turned down an opportunity to eat at the M & M, her favorite place for breakfast or lunch.
Irene is survived by sisters-in-law, Lois Marty of Mt. Horeb and Mary Ellen Marty Laeser of Monroe; several nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews and their children; special friends, Lucille Elmer, Evelyn Moritz and Eva Zwiefel; as well as cousins and many other dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Melvin, Wilbert and infant twins, Dwight and Dorothy; a niece, Marilyn; and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday April 15, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Zwingli United Church of Christ, 416 E. Lake Ave., Monticello, WI with the Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Relatives and friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow the service at Highland Cemetery, Monticello. Memorial contributions may be made to Zwingli United Church of Christ. The Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home of Monticello, WI is serving the family.
