Horse accident leads to lawsuit

MONROE - A Brooklyn woman is suing a Browntown couple for negligence after she seriously hurt herself riding one of their horses, according to records filed in Green County Circuit Court.

Joanna Ace, 35, is seeking $5,000 from Jeffrey and Dawn Schlough, W8602 County B. American Family Insurance is named as a co-defendant.

The accident happened while Ace was a guest at their residence in October 2010.

Dawn Schlough encouraged Ace to ride one of the horses, Shiloh, and "assured the plaintiff that the horse was well-behaved and she should have no problems," the complaint states.

But as Ace got off the horse, it took off while one of her feet remained in the stirrup, seriously injuring her. Ace "later learned that the horse she was on had bucked off two other riders in the past," and that Dawn Schlough knew this.

Ace alleges Schlough was "negligent in failing to properly warn (her) that the horse had dangerous tendencies." Had Ace known about the horse's past, she "would not have ridden the horse."

The case is assigned to Judge James Beer, but no initial court date is set.
