Herman Edward "Ed" Halvorson, 81, of Miles, IA formerly of the Green/Lafayette county area, passed away on Tuesday morning, April 12, 2011, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, IA.
He was born on December 23, 1929, in Seymour Township, Lafayette County, WI, to Herman and Myrtle (Thorson) Halvorson. He married Jean Brecklin on September 1, 1951. He later married Margaret McGranahan.
Ed had farmed in Wisconsin and Iowa, and through the years had owned and operated several bars in the Maquoketa and Miles area. He was an avid and dedicated Green Bay Packers fan. He loved boating, fishing, snowmobiling, gardening and being outdoors.
He is survived by his long-time friend of 29 years, Bonnie Calentine of Sabula, IA, her children and their families; 3 sons, Richard (Karen) Halvorson of Monroe, WI, Randall Halvorson of Browntown, WI, and Dennis Halvorson of Monticello, WI; 6 grandchildren, Amber and Megan Halvorson, Olivia Halvorson, and Aaron, Casey and Dayna Halvorson; 2 great-grandchildren; sisters Jeaneen (Bobby) Benson of Darlington, WI, Melva Jean "Lolly" (Henry) Tschanz of Monroe, WI, Idellis (Walter) McKillip of Monroe, WI, and Arlene Heins of Monroe, WI; brothers Clinton (Pauline) Halvorson of Darlington, WI, and Eldon Halvorson of Madison, WI; a sister-in-law, Sharon Halvorson of Darlington, WI; his ex-wife Margaret, 7 step-children and their families; many nieces and nephews and other family members. He was preceeded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Edwin in infancy and Sylvester on December 4, 2010; and a son Ronald in 2005.
An open house in Ed's honor will be held Saturday, May 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the VFW hall in Monroe, WI.
