NEW GLARUS - Herbert T. Knobel, age 86, of New Glarus, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2009 at the Monroe Clinic Hospital. He was born on March 28, 1923 in Monroe to his parents, Tobias and Elizabeth (Schneider) Knobel. Herbert graduated from New Glarus High School in 1941. He then served in the Army during World War II and was awarded a Bronze Battle Star, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, three Overseas Bars, a Good Conduct Medal, and Purple Heart. On October 16, 1948 he was united in marriage to Darlene Froh in Mt. Horeb. Herbert was employed by the General Motors Assembly Division in Janesville for over 30 years. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Belleville.

Herbert is survived by: two sons, Dean and Dick Knobel of New Glarus; four daughters, Diane (Ted) Crapp of New Glarus, Donna Knobel of Oregon, WI, Delayne Strand of Hood River, OR, and Betsy (Paul) Elsner of New Glarus; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Holum of Mt. Horeb and Doris Badalich of Dodgeville.

He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel; his wife, Darlene; parents; and a brother, Palmer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 338 Harrison St, Belleville, WI with the Rev. Kenneth Klink officiating with burial in the Swiss Church Cemetery in New Glarus.

Relatives and friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2009 at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home, 29 6th Ave., New Glarus, WI.
