Harold T. Shager, age 89, of Monroe died on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on September 25, 1924 in Wiota Township, the son of Henry and Agnes (Larsen) Shager.
Harold was baptized and confirmed at Wiota Lutheran Church. He attended Woodford Grade School and graduated from Monroe High School.
Harold served in the U.S. Army infantry company B - 99th infantry Battalion in World War II, as an automatic rifleman, participating in the Normandy Campaign.
Harold was employed at Monroe Ace Hardware as a sales associate for 52+ years. Harold continued enjoying outdoor activities for many years honing his archer and fishing skills. He truly loved their trips to Northern Wisconsin in the summer. In later years after retirement he always looked forward to his Senior bowling league and playing Yass at the Senior Center.
Harold was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ of Monroe and the Monroe V.F.W.
Harold spent his youth growing up in Woodford learning and appreciating the outdoors and love of playing baseball. He spent a number of years playing first base for the Woodford Home Talent team in the Wisconsin/Illinois league after returning from his military duties overseas during WWII. It's at this time he met the love of his life and true partner of 62 years. He was married to Heddy Krahenbuhl on February 24, 1952 at Clarno Methodist Church.
Harold is survived by his wife, Heddy Shager of Monroe, sister, Dorothy Pandow, of Monroe, brother-in-law: Karl and LuAnn Krahenbuhl of Monroe, many nieces and nephews who enjoyed spending time with and seeing their families grow over the years. He also has a cousin and special friend Delbert and Jean Shager and family, and his faithful companion Molly.
He was predeceased by his father, Henry and mother, Agnes, sister and brother-in-law, Lillian (Rienhold) Beiri, sister-in-law and husband, Margaret (Duane) Hawthorne, brother-in-law, Steven Pandow, nephew, John Beiri, niece, Barbara Copus.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 12:00 P.M. at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home with Fr. Gary Krahenbuhl (nephew) and Rev. Tiff Bates officiatng. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established in Harold's memory.
