Harold R. Hermanson, age 88 of Monroe, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at his home. Harold was born on March 1, 1922 in Lamont Township, Lafayette County, the son of Milton and Edna (Christianson) Hermanson.
He attended various rural schools in Lafayette County and one year of high school in South Wayne before staying home to help his parents on the farm.
He married Evelyn Lersch in 1948. He farmed his entire life in the Gratiot and Argyle areas until retiring in 1986. Harold married Elva (Brandt) Herbst on April 22, 1988 at St. Victor Catholic Church in Monroe. Harold and Elva resided in Monroe where he worked for 15 years delivering vehicles for Monroe Truck Equipment. He considered this his "dream job" and enjoyed socializing with all the drivers and made many lasting friendships.
He was well known for his love of dancing and enjoyed reminiscing with family and friends. Harold was an avid fisherman especially enjoying the trips to Canada.
He was a member of St. Victor Catholic Church, Monroe Moose Lodge #754, and was always available to volunteer his time to the Monroe American Legion Post #84.
He is survived by his wife, Elva Hermanson of Monroe; seven children, Robert Hermanson of Gratiot, Bill Hermanson of Monroe, Deborah (Larry) Winter of Monroe, Susan Hermanson (Rich Lanz), Janine (Jeff) Smith, all of Baraboo, Penny Bartosik of South Wayne, Lisa (Dan) Gobeli of Browntown; nine step-children, Bob (Chris) Herbst of Benton, Steve (Beth) Herbst of Monroe, Ed (Dawn) Herbst of Hazel Green, LeAnn Olson of Minnesota, Jim (Carla) Herbst of Milton, Kristie (Joe) Wubben of Menomonee, IL, Bill Herbst (Sherry Cook) of Monroe, David Herbst of Chicago, IL, Brian (Polly) Herbst of Cuba City; step-son-in-law, Dennis Busch of Shullsburg; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 18 step-grandchildren; 19 step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Judy (Keith) Butler of South Wayne; and two brothers, Charles (Betty) of Darlington and Carroll (Judy) Hermanson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jeff in 1975; a sister, Ruth Saunders; and two brothers, Gaylord and Milton Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 28, 2010, at St. Victor Catholic Church with Father Michael Klarer officiating. Graveside services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthews Catholic Cemetery, Shullsburg.
