Brodhead - Gilbert William Hintz, age 89, passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at Wood's Crossing Nursing Home, Brodhead. He was born on January 1, 1919 at home, 9th Street, Brodhead, the son of William and Frieda (Buehler) Hintz.

During the Depression era, Gilbert's youth days were on his parents farm, east of Brodhead. He assisted the family income by selling garden vegetables, eggs, milk, and home-made butter to Brodhead residences. He later worked as a 'hired-farmer' and also worked nights setting pins at games at the Smith Bowling Alley and projectionist at the local Brodhead movie theater. In 1948, Gilbert started working for the Green County Highway Department as a Patrolman. He service in that capacity for 32 years, retiring in 1980. Gilbert was the oldest life long member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brodhead, serving many positions. During the early days of the church, Gilbert started the fire stoves every Sunday morning, or shoveled snow in the winter and rang the bell for the church and funerals. He taught Sunday School and was the school superintendent from 1949-1967, and a choir member until 1980, when he retired. He was an avid gardener producer and was known for his beautiful flower gardens.

Gilbert is survived by his sister, Louise (Dale) Roenneburg, Brodhead, two nieces, Lureen M. Honig, El Paso, TX, and Carolyn (William) Zeiger, Saginaw, MI, three grandnieces, Renee(Michael) Viens, Lawrence, MA, Heather (Joel) Frey, El Paso, TX, Stephanie Zeiger, Detroit, MI, great-grandniece, Megan Presely, El Paso, TX, and a great-grand nephew, Nicholas Viens, Lawrence, MA.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 17, 2007, at St Peter's Lutheran Church, Brodhead, WI, with Pastor Mark Neumann officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. on Sunday until time of services at the church. Memorials may be made to the Brodhead EMS or the Monroe Humane Society.
