Gerald E. Heitzman, 92 of Slinger, Wis., formerly of Albany, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017 at Pavilion at Glacier Valley. He was born on Dec. 15, 1924 in Hospers, Iowa; the son of Joseph and Cecilia (Brandenberg) Heitzman. He graduated from Orange City High School and Iowa State with a Bachelor's degree in education. Gerald married Harriet M. Klay in December of 1942. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1942 through 1946, serving in the South Pacific Islands and Japan. Gerald taught social studies and English in Brodhead and Albany for many years; he also served as bank president in Albany. He was a member of Albany United Methodist Church in Albany, and one of the founding members of the Albany Lions club and the McDermott-Steindorf American Legion Post #144 in Albany.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet of Slinger, Wis.; five children: David (Sharon) Heitzman of St. Paul, MN, Barbra (Joseph) Whalen of Coon Rapids, MN, Mary Jo (Daniel) Dunphy of Albany, Donna (Marvin) Fleck of West Bend, WI, and John Heitzman of Brodhead; nine grandchildren: Rebecca (Brian) Sievers, Joshua (Leah) Heitzman, Molly Whalen, Karen (Timothy) Kroner, John (Kelly) Dunphy, Michael (Heather) Dunphy, Kevin Fleck, Brett and Courtney Heitzman; a grand-daughter in law, Denise Whalen; six great grandchildren: Mackenzie, Madison, Kaitlyn, Danny, Adalyn and Alex. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Georgia C. Marra, grandsons, Brian Fleck and Timothy Whalen.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 16, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Albany United Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas Moe officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery. A visitation will be held from noon until the time of service at the church. A memorial fund will be established in Gerald's name. SHRINER HAGER GOHLKE Funeral Home is assisting the family.
