Frederick John "Fritz" Rieder, age 83 of New Glarus, formerly of
Monticello, died Monday, January 10, 2011 at the New Glarus Home from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. He was born in Monroe, Wisconsin on October 30, 1927 to John and Dorothy (Detweiller) Rieder. After graduating from Monroe High School Fritz farmed with his father.
He married Hulda Aeschliman on June 19, 1948. He rented a farm on the corner of Highway 69 and County DR from 1950 until 1956. In 1956 he had an opportunity to buy a dairy in southern California, but the deal fell through shortly after their arrival so he and his family returned to Green County. Fritz rented a farm in Monroe Township until 1957, when he moved to a small farm east of Monroe and raised replacement heifers for his father while also working at the Swiss Cheese Corporation. In 1960 his father-in-law, John Aeschliman, offered Fritz the opportunity to purchase a 130 acre farm between Monticello and Albany (Mt. Pleasant Township). Fritz served as Mt. Pleasant Town Chairman for a short time, served as a member of the Zwingli UCC Consistory and a 4-H adult leader. He farmed until 1979 when health issues forced him to retire. He built a handicap accessible house in Monticello where he and his wife lived until his deteriorating health forced him to move to the New Glarus Home in 2003. His wife, Hulda, joined him in 2005 and they were roommates until she died on June 9, 2009.
He is survived by a son, Paul (Sue) Rieder of Albany; two granddaughters, Heidi (Eric) Kassebaum of Palm Coast, Fl and Lacey (David) Stoerp of Monroe; a great grandson, Chase Stoerp; his sister, Mildred "Toody" (James) Ross of Sun Prairie; his brother, Robert (Gloria) Rieder of Monroe; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a daughter, Jane Rieder.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 14, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at the New Glarus Home Chapel with Rev. Lawrence Balleine of Zwingli United Church of Christ officiating.
