Evalyn J. (Small) Mikes, age 88, longtime Des Plaines resident, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe, WI. Evalyn was born October 10, 1919, in Half Day, IL, to Bert and Eva Small. Evalyn "Mickey" graduated from Mundelein Grammar School, Libertyville High School and St. Luke's Nursing School in Chicago. She was employed by Visiting Nurse Association of Chicago for over 30 years. Evalyn was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Des Plaines, Des Plaines Camera Club, Self Help Pantry and Closet, and Des Plaines Historical Society before moving to Monroe, WI in 2006. Mickey was Girl Scout Leader of Senior Troop 64 for 30 years. She was an independent lady who loved to travel, take photos, collect dolls, and socialize.
Survivors include her brother, Ralph (Lillian) Small of Green Valley, AZ; nieces, Sharon (Gilbert) Mitchell of McConnell, IL and Susan (John) McCormick of Grayslake, IL; grand-nieces, Julie (Dan) Davis of Orangeville, IL, Jennifer McCormick of Libertyville, IL and Katie (Steve) Bolich of Schaumberg, IL; great-grand-niece, Megan Davis; and many dear cousins and friends. Preceding her in death are her parents; brothers, Earl and Edwin Small; sisters-in-law, Tina and Vera Small; grand-niece, Pam Mitchell; and grand-nephew, Michael Mitchell.
A Memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 666 Graceland Ave. in Des Plaines, IL on Friday, January 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. with visitation at the church starting at 10 a.m. Interment of cremains will be in Diamond Lake Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Des Plaines Methodist Church, Illinois Crossroads Girl Scout Council, or Des Plaines Historical Society.
