TOWN OF CADIZ - A horse that escaped from a nearby ranch was killed and a driver injured in a crash early Tuesday on Wisconsin 11, authorities say.

Hugo Hernandez-Herrera, 30, Monroe, was driving eastbound near Ullom Road when he encountered four or five horses on the highway, according to the Green County Sheriff's Department. One horse died on impact. The crash was reported at 12:23 a.m.

Hernandez was transported to the Monroe Clinic Hospital ER where he was treated and released. His vehicle sustained severe damage and had to be towed.

The horses had escaped from the M&M Ranch run by Mareth Ellsworth, 63, and Matthew C. Goebel, 48, and were rounded up and returned. No charges have been filed against the owners, who were reportedly not aware that the animals had gone missing.

"The horses are known to play with the gates," said Pam Young, the sheriff's executive legal assistant.
