E. Loraine Lehto, 95, of Rockford, passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at Harbor House Assisted Living in Monroe, WI. Born on December 8, 1912 in Moscow, MI, the daughter of Grover C. and Zaida Gamble Mallory. She married Oiva (Whitey) Lehto on May 31, 1937 in Fremont, IN. Loraine attended school in Ohio and Michigan, graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI with a bachelor's degree in business education and later earned a master's degree in business education from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. Loraine and Oiva lived in Michigan until 1941 when they moved to Rockford, IL. They also enjoyed their summer home in Northern Minnesota, were "Snowbirds" in Lakeland, Florida and lived in Wisconsin for several years. She taught business in Michigan and Illinois, including Pecatonica and Rockford Public Schools and Illinois Valley Community College in LaSalle-Peru, IL. She was also a legal secretary and a school secretary. Loraine loved to read, research genealogy and play the piano, and was active in Girl Scouts, the Parent Teacher Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Delta Pi Epsilon and Pi Lambda Theta. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Rockford and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Florida.
Loraine's life will be celebrated by her daughters, Ruth (Marvin) Espenscheid and Nancy (Robert) Bailey; grandchildren, Sarah (Kevin) Lueschow, Ben (Bev) Espenscheid, Jon (Shannon) Espenscheid, Thad Espenscheid, Amy (Bryan) Stolee, Carrie (Joe) Mann, Jennie (Paul) Saltzgiver and Kim (David) Ritschel; 16 great-grandchildren; 6 nieces; and many friends. Predeceased by her husband, Oiva, in 1997; brother, Horace R. (Bud) Mallory in 1951.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church, 406 N. Main Street, with Pastor Bob Hillenbrand officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Interment will be at a later date in Moscow, MI.
