NEW GLARUS - Duane C. Sherven, age 64, died peacefully on January 14, 2018 in the home where he was born with his family by his side after a courageous and hard fought 6-and-a-half-year battle with multiple myeloma. Duane was born on April 7, 1953 at home on the family farm in New Glarus Township to Orton and Esther (Knudtson) Sherven. He was baptized and confirmed at York Memorial Lutheran Church. Duane graduated from New Glarus High School in 1971 and from UW-Platteville in 1977 with a degree in Agriculture Education and taught high school agriculture for two years. He was married to Janet Murray on September 24, 1977 at Springdale Lutheran Church in Mt. Horeb. In March of 1979, Duane and Janet returned to the family farm to start dairy and crop farming and to raise their family. Duane had a deep love for farming and was a steward of the land which he tried to pass along to the next generation. Duane was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in New Glarus and served on various church committees. Duane was also actively involved in town and county government for nearly 30 years and enjoyed all things agriculture, music, sweet treats, cherry pie, reading, hunting, cutting hay and wood, sports, trips, and family activities.
Duane is survived by his wife Janet, three sons Daniel (Mikaela) of Mount Horeb, Thomas (Megan) of New Glarus, and Timothy (Ellie) of Sun Prairie, a grandson Mason, and another grandson due in June 2018. He is further survived by his brothers Verdean (Mary) of Monticello, Jerome (Sylvia) of Madison, Larry (JoAnn) and Steve (Kristine) both of Belleville, a brother-in-law Rodger Stampfli of Verona, aunt Helen Sherven of Mount Horeb, nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends, and Janet's brothers David (Peggy) Murray of Arizona and Jim (Becky) Murray of Mount Horeb and their families.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, sisters Audrey Stampfli and Joyce Sherven, a nephew Keith Sherven, aunts and uncles, and in-laws Robert and Marion Murray.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 506 Twelfth Ave., New Glarus, WI with the Rev. Gene Talley officiating. Fellowship and food will follow the service. Private inurnment will take place at the York Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
A gathering of relatives and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 506 Twelfth Ave., New Glarus and from 11:00 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church.
