Donald P. "Donny" Monson age 70 of Darlington, WI formerly of Wiota, WI passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 8, 2015 at Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County in Darlington. He was born February 21, 1945 in Monroe, WI, the son of Paul and Bernice (Vinger) Monson. Donny graduated from Darlington High School in 1963. He lived and farmed in Wiota Township for 62 years. In the mid 1990's he began delivering papers for the Shopping News in the South Wayne, Gratiot, and Monticello areas, The Monroe Times in the New Glarus and Blanchardville areas, and the Wisconsin State Journal in the South Wayne, Winslow, and Browntown areas.
Donny is survived by special friend: Nancy Scott of Darlington and her children Susan and Marcia; brother: Gayle Monson of Wiota; sister: Joyce (Dave) Bevan of Platteville, WI; sister-in-law: Libby Monson of Darlington; 11 nieces and nephews: Dan, Jeff, Jane, Kathy, Susie, Steve, Ann, Theresa, Shawn, Jason, and Darcy; and many great and great-great-nieces and nephews; He was preceded in death by his father: Paul on November 17, 2009; his mother: Bernice on December 3, 2006; three brothers: Gary, David, and Phillip Monson; and one sister-in-law: Kate Monson.
Donny was a member of Wiota Lutheran Church, Pecatonica Antique Tractor Club, and served as a past President and Vice President of the Lafayette Manor Auxiliary. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. Donny was an avid Sudoku puzzle solver and reader of romance novels, especially Nicholas Sparks novels. He loved bowling, attending Badger Football games, and traveling to Norway which he had done twice. He enjoyed playing cards and Bingo with the residents at the Lafayette Manor. He looked forward to getting together with his classmates once a month for breakfast. Donny was a previous driver for Commission on Aging for Lafayette County. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Wiota Lutheran Church (6682 State Highway in rural South Wayne) with Rev. Luke S. Smetters officiating. Burial will be in West Wiota Lutheran Cemetery where Military Graveside Rites will be accorded by the Bates-O'Brien-Howe-Wiegel-Roelli American Legion Post #214 of Darlington. A visitation will be held Wednesday, May 13, 2015 from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Erickson Funeral Home (508 Main St, Darlington) and from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at the Church on Thursday.
