Dewaine Slater, age 75 of rural Blanchardville, died on Tuesday morning, March 16, 2010 at his home on the family farm. He was born on September 12, 1934 in Decatur, Illinois to Cyril and Doris (Smith) Slater. He attended school in Decatur. After finishing his schooling he lived in Decatur, and worked at Admiral TV in Harvard, Illinois for 27 years as manufacturing manager. He was married on September 16, 1961 in Harvard to Sally O'Brien. After the Admiral plant closed, in 1978, he started farming with his family in rural Blanchardville. Dewaine and Sally retired from the farm in 1995. He was very active in Community Antique Tractor Pullers, Blanchardville Rod and Gun Club, the Harvard Trap-Shooting Club, tractor pulling, hunting, fishing, trapshooting and restoring antique tractors.
Dewaine is survived by his wife, Sally Slater of rural Blanchardville; two children, "Shelly" Michele (Daniel) DeHaan of rural Blanchardville, and "Tiger" Dewaine (Jan) Slater of rural Blanchardville; a daughter-in-law, Jolene Slater of Capron, Illinois; his mother, Doris Dickinson of Walworth, WI; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Roberta (Vern) Lovejoy of Middleport, NJ; and three brothers, Floyd (Betty) Slater of Elkhorn, WI, James (Bernadine) Slater of Schaumberg, IL, and Tom (Ruth) Slater of Lawrence, IL. He was preceded in death by his father, Cyril Slater; his son, Steven Slater who died on September 29, 1994; and a step-brother, Jim Waller.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the York Memorial Lutheran Church in rural Blanchardville at the intersection of highways 39 and 78. Rev. Mark Gruner of the Pecatonica Lutheran Parish will officiate. Burial will be in the York Memorial Lutheran Church Cemetery. Friends may call for a visitation Saturday morning before the service, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the church. The Saether Funeral Home in Blanchardville is assisting the family.
