Frank Dylan Jay Blum, 28, Beloit, pleaded no contest Nov. 10 to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and battery, downgraded from a felony charge of substantial battery, and was sentenced to nine months on probation and 10 days in jail. An additional 90-day jail sentence was imposed but stayed. Court records indicate Blum attacked another man outside a Monroe tavern in the 1300 block of 17th Street on March 12, 2016. The victim lost his balance and fell after Blum punched him several times. Blum then kicked and stomped on his head. A witness told police "blood gushed everywhere." The victim required seven stitches to sew up a laceration on his left eyebrow. In a statement to the court, the victim said he disagreed with the court's decision to downgrade Blum's battery charge from a felony to a misdemeanor: "This man attacked me unprovoked with the intent to cause substantial bodily harm."
Demetrius White, 21, Chicago, pleaded no contest Nov. 20 to a misdemeanor charge of obtaining prescription drugs with fraud and was sentenced to 60 days in jail. He is granted Huber work-release privileges as long as he remains alcohol- and controlled substance-free. Felony charges of bail jumping, misappropriating ID info and obtaining a controlled substance by fraud were dismissed. Court records indicate White used a false name Jan. 5 to get amoxicillin, albuterol and promethazine with codeine at Walgreens, 717 8th Ave., Monroe.
Nicole Gail Bauman, 35, Janesville, was charged Oct. 23 with a Class H felony count of child abuse and a Class B misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, stemming from an incident Oct. 1 at the Bank of Brodhead, 806 E. Exchange St. According to court records, Bauman punched her 17-year-old daughter in the face during a dispute at a Sunday afternoon funeral luncheon. An officer who responded to the scene wrote in a report that the teenager had "dried blood on her shirt and also active bleeding around her nose ring." Bauman told police the girl was "swearing and being disrespectful." She has a pre-trial conference Feb. 6.
Jonah Michael Hanson, 23, Janesville, was charged Nov. 20 with a Class I felony count of fleeing or eluding an officer in a vehicle and misdemeanor counts of resisting/obstructing an officer and driving with a revoked license. Court records indicate Hanson led an officer on a chase Oct. 4 in the Brodhead area after the officer tried to stop the motorcyclist for running three stoplights. The officer reported last seeing Hanson driving 65 mph through a corn field on an off-road model dirt bike with no plates.
Anthony Allen Nickel, 36, Pearl City, Illinois, was charged Nov. 20 with two Class I felony counts and one Class A misdemeanor count of failure to pay child support. Court records indicate he failed to pay support for a child born in 2009 between 2013 and 2017. His arrearages currently total $2,270.22.
Timothy Bryan Hoefer, 31, Lena, was charged Nov. 20 with seven Class I felony counts of failure to pay child support. Court records indicate he failed to pay support for a child born in 2009 between 2013 and 2017. His arrearages currently total $10,632.68.
Robert E. Copeland, Jr., 45, Freeport, was charged Nov. 21 with nine Class I felony counts of failure to pay child support. Court records indicate he failed to pay child support between 2013 and 2017. A warrant is issued for his arrest.
Misdemeanors
Louis Richard Mendonca, 74, Monroe, pleaded no contest Oct. 25 to misdemeanor charges of battery and bail jumping and was sentenced to two years on probation. A misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and 10 counts of misdemeanor bail jumping were dismissed. The charges stem from several alcohol-related incidents this year, according to court records. On June 14, Mendonca was taken to detox after an ambulance responded to Mendonca's home in the 400 block of 21st Street because he had fallen and was bleeding from his head. His wife told police he had been "drinking alcohol for days" and had physically abused her, causing bruises on her arm. A test showed his blood-alcohol concentration was .24 percent, three times the legal limit for driving. On July 4, Mendonca was found with a .17 blood-alcohol content, in violation of a court order that he not drink. On July 6, police found Mendonca at the residence with a mostly empty bottle of vodka, in violation of court orders that he not be there or possess alcohol. A document filed with the court at the time of his sentencing shows Mendonca attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings nine times between Sept. 6 and Oct. 23.
Darwin Dale Williams, 59, Monroe, was charged Oct. 23 with two counts of misdemeanor bail jumping and an unclassified misdemeanor count of knowingly violating a domestic-abuse order. Court records indicate he drove past his estranged wife's house in Monroe. He stood mute on the charges Nov. 6, and pleas of not guilty were entered on his behalf. His next court appearance is Nov. 28.
Daniyel C. Jones, 19, and Lydia Mary Anne Lee, 20, both of Monticello, were charged Oct. 23 with one Class B misdemeanor count each of disorderly conduct, stemming from a dispute at their home Oct. 12. Court records indicate the couple got into an argument "about the race of Santa Claus." Not-guilty pleas have been entered in the cases. Jones and Lee are due back in court Jan. 16.
Christopher Michael Arn, 32, Monroe, was charged Oct. 25 with a Class B misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct and two Class A misdemeanor counts of bail jumping, stemming from an incident Oct. 9 at a home in the 1500 block of 16th Avenue. He reportedly "barged" into the home and screamed at his estranged wife. A warrant is issued for his arrest.
Shawn William Boss, 18, Monroe, was charged Nov. 1 with a Class A misdemeanor count of resisting/obstructing an officer, a Class B misdemeanor count of threatening injury via computer message and three counts of misdemeanor bail jumping. His ex-girlfriend told police he sent her threatening Snapchat messages, including a threat to "beat" her. Boss has a plea hearing Nov. 30.
