FELONIES
Royce Cooley, 44, Janesville, was charged last week with one Class H felony count of stalking, three Class A misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property and two Class A misdemeanor counts of theft. Cooley's charges stem from a series of incidents that took place at a Brodhead residence between July 1 and Aug. 15. On July 16, the victim reported that her vehicle had been defaced with the word "slut" written on it in black permanent marker. She added that, two weeks prior, three pornographic DVDs were found discarded on her driveway. On July 22, the word "bitch" was similarly found on her car. Although she covered the graffiti with tape, the tape was removed July 27, and a roll of tape was stolen from the vehicle. The victim then set up surveillance cameras, which recorded Cooley stealing a wheel cover from her vehicle Aug. 15. After his arrest, Cooley said he didn't know why he was so fixated on the victim, although the two had been in a relationship in the past. He will appear in court for his preliminary hearing on Sept. 14.
Nikole Carene Schaitel, 42, Browntown, was charged last week with a Class I count of theft after being accused of stealing more than $2,500 from a Monticello gas station in 2013. Schaitel was charged after a months-long investigation into consistent money shortages at the station. It was discovered that Schaitel, an employee at the station, repeatedly stole funds from the station between Jan. 21 and Nov. 11 of 2013 to the tune of $2,508.82. Although she denied involvement, a hidden camera at the station recorded Schaitel repeatedly transferring money from a business cash register directly to her purse. Shaitel's employment at the station was terminated shortly thereafter. Her initial appearance in court is scheduled for Sept. 12.
Timothy David Kennedy, 34, Brodhead, was charged Monday with a third-offense count of driving while intoxicated with a child passenger. Kennedy's charge stems from an incident Aug. 21, when an erratic driver was reported entering a ditch in the Town of Brodhead. A police officer stopped Kennedy's vehicle on 9th Street in Brodhead, where he was found to smell strongly of alcohol and with a 4-year-old child in his car. Kennedy refused to take a breathalyzer test, as he correctly assumed he would be arrested regardless of his compliance; however, he failed several field sobriety tests. His preliminary hearing is scheduled to take place Sept. 7.
Matthew Phillip Vincent, 59, Monroe, was charged Monday with a Class I felony charge of substantial battery and a Class B misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. Vincent was charged after an incident Aug. 21, during which he reportedly punched a woman in the face repeatedly at a residence in Monroe. According to a police report, Vincent struck the victim after a heated argument. Although Vincent claimed to have only thrown a plastic soda bottle at the victim, the victim's nose was broken and sustained multiple lacerations, one of which required six stitches to close. Vincent's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 8.
