July 15th, 1944 - January 20, 2018
Chris Edward Alston, 73 of Kingman, Arizona passed away on January 20th, following a brief battle with Leukemia.
He was born July 15th, 1944 to Lucille (Winegar) and Donald J. Alston in Monroe. Chris attended grade school in a one room country school, and during his teenage years he worked at the family business, Alston Auto Parts. He graduated from Monroe Sr. High in 1962. He also attended UW Madison.
In July 1964 he married Barbara Jean Rufenacht and the couple had two children, Cheryl Elaine and Donald Edward. Chris was employed at Thorpe Finance in Racine, then returned to Monroe and worked at Monroe Cheese Corporation and a few other local businesses before deciding to go into business for himself.
In 1972 he purchased the Hilltop Cafe and remodeled it and reopened it as The Grotto featuring "Crazy Chris's Pizza" The business was relocated to the square in Monroe following a fire at the original location. Chris also owned and operated Dirty John's Silver Dollar Saloon.
In 1984 he moved to Arizona to pursue real estate and home building opportunities. He established Alston Quality Homes which built over 500 houses in the area, the Flying A Gas Station, several commercial buildings and additional homes over the years.
Chris enjoyed traveling and spending time with his friends, collecting antique memorabilia and of course his motorized "toys," including airplanes, Harley's, trucks, jeeps, dune buggy, the gray Bob Seger Van and his white 75' Corvette.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father. Survived by brother Donald Joseph Alston, daughter Cheryl (Tom) Olson and son Donald E. Alston.
A Celebration of Life is planned for June 30th in Monroe at Turner Hall.
