Betty M. (DeVoe) Trumpy

Betty M. (DeVoe) Trumpy, age 90 of Madison died Saturday, June 4, 2011, at HospiceCare in Fitchburg.

Betty was born March 16, 1921 in Brodhead, WI the first born of Leslie and Rose (Wyss) DeVoe. She grew up in the Monroe area and married Alfred Trumpy. The couple farmed in Monticello, Juda, and on the Trumpy home farm in Clarno Township before moving to Madison in 1959. Betty graduated from Monroe High School at the age of sixteen, attended Green County Normal School, and taught rural school at the age of eighteen. Betty was an active leader in 4-H and Homemakers, loved to learn and teach others, and was an avid seamstress, weaver, and quilter. One of her quilts has become part of a permanent collection at the Museum of American Folk Art in New York.

She also enjoyed many other artistic activities including embroidery, drawing, sculpture, knitting, and gardening. She was always a voracious reader and in later years she was a member of a book club and writing group, creating a book of stories of her life for family and friends to enjoy.

She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Alfred Trumpy of Madison; four children, David (Jeanne) Trumpy of Farmington, MI, Cheryl (Peter) Koerwitz of Blue Mounds, Janet (Philip) Kinson of Brecksville, OH, and Karen (Tim) White of Verona; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren with the 12th. due in August; and a brother, Robert (Janet) DeVoe of Madison. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Eugene DeVoe; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 11:00 A.M., at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 1329 31st. Ave., Monroe. Rev. Lowell Stuessy will officiate with interment to follow in East Clarno Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. The family suggests memorials be given in Betty's name to Wisconsin Public Radio.
