Bernice M. Benkert, age 86, of Monroe, died on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at her home. She was born on April 3, 1927 daughter of John and Elizabeth (Ruegsegger) Bussman. Bernice and Daniel A. Benkert were married on May 4, 1949 in Warren, IL.

Bernice was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish.

Bernice's life work was her children and grandchildren, farming with her husband Dan, and her involvement in numerous civic and community organizations. Her greatest joy was giving to others, be it unconditional love for her family, her generosity to the many organizations and causes she was involved in, or her hospitality, opening her home and heart to whomever called or stopped by. She was especially grateful for her wonderful friends. Bernice left us all a legacy of giving, learning and the value of an adventurous spirit, demonstrated by some of her favorite things: traveling the world, skiing, biking, playing tennis, enjoying the arts, entertaining family and friends, always wanting to learn new things, and sharing her experiences. Bernice will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends.

Surviving are her children, Daniel (Kathy) Benkert of Waunakee; Chris (Mark) Geiger of Verona; Julie (Andy) Wilke of Monroe; Victor (Rita) Benkert of Monroe; daughter-in-law, Karen Benkert of Glendale; brother, John Bussman of Warren, IL; sister, Elizabeth Dubach of Warren, IL; brother-in-law Bill Ziegle of Bloomington, MN; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
