Bernard Munz, age 92, of Monroe, died on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on March 1, 1919 the son of Otto and Bertha (Nussbaumer) Munz. He attended Monroe High School. Bernard entered the U.S. Army April 15, 1944, serving with the 128th Infantry Antitank Co. participating in the battles of Papua, Southern Philippines, Luzon and New Guinea, achieving the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, WWII Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Presidential Unit Emblem, Bronze Star Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII and six Overseas Service Bars, and discharged on August 16, 1945. Bernard married Arlene McGuire on September 10, 1948 at the Jordan Lutheran Church. He worked for the Lake Shire-Marty Company, Green County Highway Department and seasonally for the Swiss Colony. He was a member of Jordan Lutheran Church, V.F.W. Cecil Jones Post# 2312. Bernard enjoyed woodworking doing several projects around the house and for others. He was also well known for his roto-tilling throughout the community, helping friends and neighbors.

He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn (Larry) Schafer; grandchildren, Toby Schafer and Tiffany (husband Chad); brother, Carl Munz; sisters, Helen Lehr, Isabelle Hudson; sisters-in-law, Charlene Erickson, Dorothy Munz, also several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife, Arlene in 1991; brother, Otto Munz; twin sister, Bernice in infancy, sister and brother-in-law, Bertha & Gift Morton; brother-in-law, Ernest Lehr and sister-in-law, Marian Munz, brothers and sisters-in-law; Donald (Margaret) McGuire, and Burnell (Mary Ann) McGuire.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at the Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home with Pastor Dennis Perger officiating. Burial will be in the Jordan Lutheran Cemetery in Jordan Township Green Co. A visitation will be held on Saturday from 12 noon until the time of service at the funeral home.
